Acanthus spinosus is a perennial with an upright growth habit and deeply incised, spiny-edged leaves, giving it a somewhat bolder appearance than other varieties. The plant can reach a height of 80 to 120 cm. From June to August, it blooms with striking, upright flower spikes. The flowers are lilac to light purple with white bracts surrounded by spiky, purplish bracts. The plant prefers sunny to partially shaded locations in well-drained soil. It is very winter-hardy.
