Prunus cerasus 'Schaarbeekse Kriek' is a traditional Belgian sour cherry tree with a fairly upright, open growth habit. It reaches a height of approximately 4 to 6 meters. In April, it blooms profusely with white flowers. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow or orange-brown. The tree grows best in a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil. It is primarily planted for its unique, dark red cherries with a distinctly sour flavor, ideal for making things like kriek beer. The 'Schaarbeekse Kriek' is fairly winter-hardy, but somewhat susceptible to diseases such as Monilia and cracking. It is not self-pollinating and requires a nearby pollinator. The fruit is edible, but the seeds are slightly poisonous if consumed in large quantities.
